How Much Vinyl Do You Need to Wrap Your Car? A Size-by-Size Guide

by My Store Admin 30 Aug 2026 0 Comments

"How much vinyl do I need?" is one of the questions we hear most. Order too little and you're stuck mid-install waiting for another roll, which may come from a different production batch and not match perfectly. Order too much and you've paid for film you won't use. Here's how to get it right.

Full wrap estimates by vehicle type

These figures are for a full wrap using 60-inch-wide film, the standard width for car wrap film and the width of every Milliotone roll.

  • Mini and compact cars (Fiat 500, Mini Cooper, Smart Fortwo): 42–45 ft
  • Hatchbacks (VW Golf, Tesla Model 3 / Y, Honda Fit): 52–55 ft
  • Sedans (Toyota Camry, BMW 3 and 5 Series): 55–59 ft
  • SUVs (Toyota RAV4, BMW X5): 55–63 ft
  • Station wagons (Audi A4 Avant, Subaru Outback): 59–65 ft
  • Minivans (Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, Chrysler Pacifica): 65–80 ft

Treat these as starting points. Large bumpers, roof spoilers, body kits and wide-body builds all add to the total.

How to choose a roll size

Each Milliotone color lists its full-roll length on the product page, with options to add 10 ft or 20 ft to the same order. Compare the estimate for your car with the full-roll length, then add footage until you're covered with room to spare. For example, if your car needs around 59 ft and the full roll is 52 ft, choose the full roll plus 10 ft.

For partial jobs like a hood, roof, trunk or mirror caps, the 10 ft and 20 ft partial rolls are usually enough. Measure the panel's length and width, add about 4 inches on every side for handling and wrapping edges, and check that it fits within the 60-inch width.

Why to order extra

The estimates cover the car's surface, but a real install uses more film than that:

  • Edges and trimming. Every panel needs extra film to hold, wrap around edges and trim cleanly.
  • Keeping pieces in the same direction. Panels should all run the same way off the roll, which can leave offcuts you can't use elsewhere.
  • Mistakes. Most first-time installers redo at least one piece.
  • Future repairs. A spare piece from the same batch makes it easy to fix a scratched or replaced panel later without a visible color difference.

As a rule of thumb, add 10–15% to the estimate for your car, and buy everything in one order so all the film comes from the same batch. Write down the batch/lot ID printed on each roll in case you need to reorder.

A note on film direction

Wrap film should be applied with every piece running in the same direction off the roll. On metallic, pearl, brushed and color-shift finishes especially, a piece turned the other way can look like a slightly different shade. Plan your cuts with that in mind, and you'll waste less film.

Before you order

Start with a color sample to check the color and finish against your car in daylight. Then read our beginner installation guide or browse all Milliotone films. Not sure how much your car needs? Email inquiry@milliotone.com with the make, model and year, and we'll help you work it out.
